The Oil Cleansing Method

The Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) or Hot cloth Cleansing as it can be called has gained popularity over the last 10 years. It is an old traditional method of cleansing that comes from the ancient world.

I first become aware of oil cleansing when Lyonsleaf released their Beauty Balm, after being an acne suffer all my life it seemed wrong to use oil to clean oily skin but it seems that oil dissolves oil, and by using oil on your skin is a perfect combatant to excessive sebum.

Oil cleansing is to use natural oils in a specific combination or on their own to cleanse the skin and naturally balance the skin’s natural oils.
By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively.
The oils used to massage into your skin will dissolve the dirt & impurities that are stuck in your pores. Then steam will open your pores, allowing the oil to be easily removed taking the sebum, dirt, and bacteria with it.

Oil Cleansing produces much more nourished and moisturized skin that traditional soap and detergent based facial cleaners. Traditional cleansers can strip away all our natural oils – usually leaving us with dry, tight and sensitive skin, which necessitates using a moisturizer.

If you are new to oil cleansing, Balms are an easy transition from traditional skin cleansers to cleansing with an oil.

How to Oil Cleanse by Lyonsleaf

  • Step 1
Warm a dab of product in your hand and gently massage into skin to be cleansed whilst still dry. This is very relaxing. It can be nice to linger, take some time to pamper yourself and unwind or do it quickly if you are in a hurry.
  • Step 2
Run a clean flannel or muslin face cloth under comfortably hot water and hold it over your face allowing the steam to gently lift the dirt, make-up and dead skin cells. Wipe away residue leaving clean, hydrated skin. Muslins offer better exfoliation than flannels and dry out quickly, Towelling face flannels are nice if you like the steam.
  • Step 3
Stand back and admire your glowing complexion.

Because sebum is oil based, this will remove dirty sebum really effectively (like dissolves like). Unlike soap based cleansers it will replace the dirty sebum with clean natural nourishing oils, rich in fatty acids that your skin will greedily accept. You may not need to moisturize after oil cleansing, but if you do, you can use a very small amount of Lyonsleaf Beauty balm as a moisturizer. If your skin does feel tight you may have had the water too hot, try a little cooler next time.

Ideal for:
People with dry, sensitive and mature skin. Or anyone who wants, fresh & clean skin without stripping away your natural oils. Also recommended for those with acne as the oil dissolves sebum when it is done consistently and properly.

If you have problem skin, as with everything new with skincare you need to oil cleanse for a good 3-4 weeks before you give up and say its not for you. Your skin shows what had been happening with your body 4-6 weeks ago, and spots take 1-2 weeks to form. so if you are cleansing deeper into your pores than normal it is possible that you are going to flush up some new spots, just keep going and don't give up. Before you know it you will have beautiful clean skin with controllable breakouts, as we all get breakouts due to hormones or diet, the secret is to limit them and control them. This is done by keeping your skin clean and naturally balanced.
